Ever noticed your airtime disappearing and you have absolutely no idea why? There can be a number of reasons for this, but one of the most common reasons is subscriptions to WASP services.

If you do not remember signing up for some content service then you might have subscribed by accident, or someone might have subscribed on your behalf.

What are WASP services?

WASP (Wireless Application Service Provider) is a third party service provider who creates and distributes mobile content to subscribers via the networks of larger service providers. In other words, WASP companies provide customers with content for their phones. The customer then pays the WASP company in the form of airtime.

Examples of mobile content:

  • Ringtones
  • Mobile wallpaper downloads
  • Adult content (usually video)
  • Horoscopes
  • Jokes
  • Mobile downloads
  • Interactive voice prompts
  • Competition lines
  • News and traffic updates
  • Locating the nearest restaurant, police station or bank
  • And more

How do I know if I am subscribed to a WASP service?

If you are subscribed to a WASP service then you should be receiving some form of daily, monthly or weekly content. The best course of action is to contact your service provider to find out which WASP you are subscribed to. Vodacom and Cell C customers can contact Smartcom for information on this matter.

Once you know which services you are subscribed to, you have to contact the WASP directly if you want to cancel or change your subscription.
